Life insurance calculator

| Age | Término (A 20 años) | Vida Entera (Whole Life) | Universal Indexado (IUL) |

How is the price of life insurance calculated?
When an insurance company gives you a quote, it's making a calculated bet on how long you're likely to live and how much risk you represent compared to other people. To arrive at that number, it looks at several things about you at once, not just one:
- Your age is the most important factor. Postponing the contract for another year increases your future premium by an average of 8% to 10%, so the sooner you do it, the better.
- Your health status and medical history. The result of your health exam or questionnaire determines your risk category, and that category largely defines your final price.
- Whether you smoke or not. This is one of the factors that most significantly increases the price, regardless of your age or how healthy you are in other respects.
- Your weight and height. Being overweight is associated with a higher likelihood of developing high blood pressure or diabetes, and that can raise your risk category.
- Your gender matters, because women live on average longer than men, so they usually pay about 24% less for the same coverage, according to data from Policygenius.
- And of course, the coverage amount and the term you choose: the higher the insured sum and the more years of protection, the higher the premium, proportionally.
Pay attention to this: of these six factors, two surprise people the most when it comes to stock prices: health and tobacco. It's worth explaining them carefully, because that's where your real stock price really fluctuates.
Why your quote can be very different from someone your own age
We see this all the time in the office: two 45-year-olds, the exact same age, and they get completely different prices for the same policy. Age is just the starting point. The health risk category assigned by the insurer is what really determines the price, and if you smoke, that can be as much of a factor as everything else combined.
Insurance companies classify each applicant into one of these categories, from best to worst health:
Category | Profile | Relative price |
Preferred Plus / Elite | Impeccable health, no relevant medical history | The lowest on the market |
Preferred | Very good health, minimal variations in blood pressure or cholesterol | Low |
Standard Plus | Good health, with slight overweight or minor factors | Moderate |
Standard | Average health, some observations under control | Moderate-high |
Substandard | Chronic conditions requiring more care | High, with specific surcharge |

Types of life insurance and how they affect the price
Guy | Protection | Price level | Characteristics |
Term | Temporary (10-30 years) | The most economical | It only covers the contracted term; ideal for the productive stage or a mortgage |
Term with premium refund | Temporary | Upper-intermediate | If you survive the contract, you get 100% of what you paid back. |
Whole Life | Permanent | High | Guaranteed lifetime benefit, accumulates cash value at a fixed rate |
Indexed Universal (IUL) | Permanent | Variable | Permanent protection plus cash value linked to an index like the S&P 500 |
How much life insurance do you need?
- D — Deudas: préstamos, tarjetas y otras obligaciones.
