Enrolling in Obamacare does not always depend on an official date. There are two ways to access the plan: the annual period that opens every November, and a special enrollment that may be available to you right now if something changed in your life recently. Here we explain how each one works.

When is the official enrollment period for Obamacare?
According to Healthcare.gov, the Open Enrollment Period for Marketplace plans has these key dates:
- November 1: Enrollment opens. First day to choose or change plans.
- December 15: Deadline for your coverage to start on January 1.
- January 15: Enrollment closes. Last day to enroll. If you enroll between December 16 and January 15, your coverage starts on February 1.
Note: these dates may vary by state. The 30 states that use Healthcare.gov (including Florida and Texas) follow the federal calendar. However, states like California, New York, New Jersey, and Illinois manage their own Marketplace and may extend enrollment until January 31. Before assuming your deadline, check Healthcare.gov or call us and we will confirm the exact deadline for your state.
Important change for 2027: Starting next year, enrollment in all states will end on December 31, eliminating the January extension that existed until now.
If you need coverage today: Special Enrollment Period
You do not have to wait for the annual enrollment period if any of the following has happened to you within the last 60 days:
- Did you lose your job-based insurance or leave Medicaid.
- You moved to another state or county.
- You got married, got divorced, or had a child.
- You received your work permit, residency, or citizenship.
Any of these events opens a 60-day window to enroll outside of the standard period. It is called a Special Enrollment Period and is regulated by Healthcare.gov.
