Health insurance in Michigan

Getting health insurance in Michigan has become much easier in recent years with increased competition from insurers and federal and state subsidies aimed at increasing the coverage of more people.

Michigan is the third cheapest state in the United States to live in, according to the price index of numerous goods and services calculated by the U.S. Council for Community and Economic Research (C2ER). However, medical expenses seem to be heading in a different direction, as do the health and quality of life of its residents.

The Great Lakes State is among those with the highest per capita spending on health and hospitals, and has followed the U.S. trend of rising healthcare costs. Here, an accident, a chronic illness, or a hospitalization can ruin your financial stability.

But insurance protects you from those unexpected expenses and allows you to access a wide range of medical services, from regular checkups to specialized treatments. Stay on the page and discover the best protection options with insurance in Michigan.

Michigan: The Great Lakes State

According to the Michigan state census, it had a population of 10.1 million people in 2022, with a median age of 39.9 years. The median household income reached $68,505, reflecting an 8.39% growth compared to the previous year.

However, 13.1% of the population lives in poverty, highlighting inequalities in access to essential services, such as healthcare.

In terms of ethnic diversity, Michigan is predominantly non-Hispanic White (73.5%), followed by non-Hispanic African Americans (13.4%) and non-Hispanic Asians (3.24%). Meanwhile, the Latino community represents 2.22% of the population and faces specific challenges in accessing healthcare services, which we will explain later.

If we delve into culture, Michigan stands out for its rich cultural heritage and its historical role in the automotive industry. Detroit, known as “Motor City,” is the birthplace of major automobile brands and hosts iconic events such as the North American International Auto Show.

And when talking about Michigan, it’s impossible not to highlight the majestic Great Lakes, a natural treasure that not only enriches the state’s landscape but also serves as the backdrop for unique recreational activities. These events celebrate the cultural diversity of its communities and pay tribute to the rich historical heritage that defines the region.

The challenges of accessing health insurance in Michigan

The Great Lakes State has one of the lowest rates of uninsured people in the U.S., at 4.4%, suggesting relatively broad access to healthcare. However, the number rises to 6.2% among the population aged 19–64; and Hispanics and American Indians have higher uninsured rates, at 11.9% and 9.1%, respectively.

These disparities are mainly associated with socio-economic factors, such as lack of trust in the system, lack of awareness, limited access to quality care, discrimination, or low income. And the results directly impact families.

Still, 3% of children under 19 in Michigan are uninsured; and Black infants have a higher mortality rate than the national average (13.4% compared to 5.6%) and more than double the rate of Latino infants (6.6%) and White infants (4.3%). Abortions, chronic illnesses, and stress are also higher among minorities.

But many of these families have opportunities to protect themselves with affordable health insurance in Michigan. Of the 4.4% who lack coverage, around 70% would qualify for public insurance or a private health plan with subsidies from the ACA or Obamacare.

Health insurance in Michigan and who offers it

Group plans through work are the most common health insurance options in the Great Lakes State, representing 49.8%. In addition to typically receiving employer contributions, they allow you to add your dependents; although they can be costly for the quality they provide.

You can also apply for federal Medicaid programs (13.6%) and Medicare (18.5%) if you meet the eligibility requirements. But if you don’t qualify, you can purchase individual or family policies from private companies operating in your area, through an agent, on your own, or on the Affordable Care Act (ACA) marketplace.

Across Michigan, 10 insurers operate with private marketplace plans, some linked to government programs. Among the most notable are Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, McLaren Health Plan, Meridian, Molina, and United Healthcare, and the availability of their plans varies from city to city.

When choosing a health insurance plan and a company, you should consider factors such as premium costs, provider network, covered benefits, deductibles, and copayments. You can also research the insurer’s reputation, its customer service, and customer satisfaction.

What are the government health insurance plans in Michigan?

Although most of the insured population in Michigan prefers employer group plans, more than 40% opt for government programs, mainly Medicaid and Medicare.

Medicaid in Michigan offers two plans: Traditional Medicaid and the Healthy Michigan Plan implemented under the ACA. Both focus on low-income individuals, including children, people with disabilities, pregnant women, and older adults. The latest 2024 data shows that nearly 24% of residents are enrolled in the program, although the numbers would be higher if the state expanded Medicaid eligibility.

Medicare is the other federal program that provides hospitalization coverage, medical services, and prescription drugs to more than 2 million beneficiaries in the Great Lakes State. Often, enrollees need to purchase additional coverage to supplement these benefits and cover costs such as deductibles and copayments.

These government alternatives guarantee doctor visits, maternity and newborn services, mental health care, and other important health services. They also partially or fully cover the costs of those services. However, eligibility is determined by income, age, and other requirements that may exclude people who need them.

How much does health insurance cost per month in Michigan?

When it comes to government policies, their prices can range from \$0 to \$200 per month, as they are mostly funded with federal credits. Estimating an approximate figure is difficult, since both Medicaid and Medicare depend on the insured’s total resources, whether they receive Social Security assistance, and other particular life circumstances.

In contrast, private plans have higher rates but also more comprehensive benefits. This health insurance in Michigan has an average cost of $561 per month; but thanks to Obama’s plan discounts, it drops to just $98 per month for those who qualify.

The prices for these insurance plans vary depending on factors such as age, geographic location, type of plan, or deductible and copayment expenses. Plans that provide more coverage usually have higher premiums and lower deductibles.

In the Michigan health marketplace, you can find Bronze plans that cover about 40% of your policy expenses, with premiums between $273 and $487; and Silver plans that cover 70% of your costs, with more affordable premiums, between $338 and $751. These Silver plans are the only ones that allow a double Obamacare subsidy in Michigan: premium reduction and cost-sharing reduction.

Obamacare in Michigan: An Excellent Resolution for Affordable Health Plans

Short-term insurance plans in the state can be as affordable as $17 per month, or even less. They are convenient if you haven’t yet found a traditional health insurance plan or missed the marketplace enrollment period. They usually cover doctor visits, preventive care, and emergency care, but may exclude other essential services.

That’s why our recommendation leans toward Obamacare in Michigan, which guarantees at least 10 essential benefits and provides significant financial assistance based on your income. This assistance comes in the form of a premium reduction credit or a cost-sharing subsidy on Silver plans, allowing you to save more than $400 per month.

More than 138,000 people who lost continuous Medicaid coverage in 2023 applied for marketplace policies. And although many were no longer eligible for Medicaid due to their income, they did receive subsidies from Obamacare in Spanish. Nearly 90% of the 418,100 enrolled in health insurance plans in Michigan received financial assistance in 2024, and about one-third paid less than $10 thanks to the discounts.

Why do you need health insurance if you live in Michigan?

Currently, more than one in three adults in Michigan are obese, while in the U.S. the proportion is one in five, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). In turn, obesity causes asthma, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and certain types of cancer, conditions common to 13% of the state’s adults.

If your medical history includes any of these diseases or if you are among the 30.1% of the population suffering from arthritis or other conditions, it would be wise to have health insurance in Michigan. To start, you would need to have complete blood counts regularly to detect, diagnose, and manage these chronic conditions: the test costs about $32 in the state, but with a policy you would pay between $0 and $13.

The Great Lakes State also shows significant problems with maternal and child health. Each year, there are about 90 pregnancy-related deaths, and nearly 64% are preventable. Among infants, there are 6.4 deaths for every 1,000 live births.

In addition, around 25% of the state’s residents are over 60 years old, and nearly 40% are 50 or older. This comes with a life expectancy of 76 years. As the population ages, the demand for healthcare services increases, and having solid insurance that provides the care and medications these individuals need to avoid worsening their quality of life becomes more crucial.
