Overview of Indiana, the “Nice People State”

Indiana’s economy is based on manufacturing and agriculture. The state is also a leader in steel production and has a strong presence in the automotive industry. Additionally, it has experienced significant growth in sectors such as information technology and healthcare.

Thanks to this, Indiana boasts an affordable cost of living compared to many other regions in the United States. Housing, food, and other basic expenses are generally lower than the national average, benefiting its 3.15 million workers with an average income of $67,173.

Known as the “Hoosier State” or “the state of friendly people,” Indiana lives up to its name by offering a wide variety of attractions for visitors. From modern cities to charming small towns, it stands out for its state parks and historic landmarks. A prime example is Brown County State Park, an ideal destination for those who enjoy outdoor activities like hiking, fishing, biking, or camping.

Indiana is also home to the famous Indy 500 car race, impressive museums like Conner Prairie, and the Lotus Music Festival in Bloomington—small showcases of the state's rich cultural, historical, and sporting traditions.

In Indiana, the Latino community makes up 6.2% of the population, establishing itself as an important part of the state’s cultural diversity. The impact of this community is also reflected in the use of Spanish, which is the most spoken language after English, present in over 305,000 households, highlighting its growing influence in Indiana’s daily and cultural life.

What are the health insurance options in Indiana?

With 8.9% of residents under 65 without health insurance in Indiana, the state has a coverage rate below the national average of 7.9%. These figures reflect the ongoing challenges in healthcare accessibility and affordability.

Despite this, during 2024, nearly 296,000 enrolled in private health plans through the Marketplace. And 52% of the insured population obtained group plans through their employer, in line with an unemployment rate of just 3.9%, which is significantly lower than the national average (6.1%).

Meanwhile, 15.9% of Indiana residents benefit from Medicaid. However, the program’s expansion under the ACA increased its reach. Now, in addition to pregnant women, children, and vulnerable families, it also covers childless adults under 65 with incomes up to 138% of the federal poverty level.

In Indiana, Medicare covers over 1.3 million residents aged 65 and older, or younger individuals with disabilities, representing nearly 18% of the state’s population. Of those, 82% are enrolled in prescription drug coverage, but greater benefits can be obtained through the 144 Medicare Advantage plans available.

Short-term plans are an alternative for those who do not qualify for any of the above options. It’s important to note that short-term health plans offer a quick solution but provide fewer protections for policyholders compared to standard health insurance in Indiana and are limited to a period of no more than four months.

Which health insurers are active in Indiana?

From one year to the next, the health insurance marketplace in Indiana undergoes changes that affect the availability of insurers and the plans they offer in different areas of the state:

For example, in 2025, Celtic customers will be reassigned to a Coordinated Care plan, as this company will no longer participate in the insurance marketplace. Meanwhile, U.S. Health and Life will exit the region’s individual market and will be replaced by Unitedhealthcare Insurance Company.

Residents of the state will have access to plans from a total of six health insurance providers in Indiana, including Cigna, Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield, Humana, and Essence Health Care, as well as Aetna Health, which is new to the health insurance market.

What are the health insurance prices in Indiana through the ACA Marketplace?

In Indiana, it’s possible to find affordable coverage through the ACA Health Insurance Marketplace or Obamacare. Nationwide, this option stands out as one of the best ways to get health insurance at much lower prices—an especially important alternative in Indiana, where nearly 12.3% of households live below the federal poverty level.

In fact, nearly nine out of ten enrollees in health insurance in Indiana were eligible for premium subsidies on 2024 plans (59.6% of the population). Those who receive these subsidies are exempt from paying the full price of their policy and can get Bronze plans for as low as $0 per month, or a Silver plan for $82 in premiums with an average savings of $452.

During the open enrollment period for 2024 coverage, 295,772 people enrolled in individual private health plans through the Marketplace. This was a record-breaking figure, due to enhanced subsidies created by the American Rescue Plan and the Inflation Reduction Act.

The increase in health insurance enrollment in Indiana during 2024 was also linked to the end of continuous Medicaid coverage implemented during the pandemic. By June of that year, more than 479,000 Indiana residents had lost their Medicaid coverage, and by April, over 125,000 of them had transitioned to a plan through the Health Insurance Marketplace.
